A New Era for Northern Rail Travel

The TransPennine Route Upgrade (TRU) represents one of the most significant investments in Northern rail infrastructure in a generation. This ambitious multi-billion-pound programme will transform the railway between Manchester, Huddersfield, and Leeds, delivering faster journey times, increased capacity, and a more reliable service for millions of passengers across the North of England.

The upgrade programme encompasses a wide range of improvements, including full electrification of the route, upgraded track and signalling systems, rebuilt stations, and enhanced accessibility features. When complete, the TransPennine Route Upgrade will deliver a step-change in the quality and reliability of east-west rail connections, supporting economic growth and reducing carbon emissions across the region.

What the Upgrade Includes

The scope of the TRU programme is extensive and touches every aspect of the railway infrastructure:

  • Full electrification β€” Overhead line equipment will be installed along the entire route, enabling faster, cleaner electric trains
  • New signalling β€” Modern digital signalling systems will allow more trains to run more frequently and reliably
  • Track upgrades β€” New track and realigned curves will enable higher speed running across the Pennines
  • Station rebuilds β€” Major stations including Huddersfield and Stalybridge will receive significant upgrades
  • Accessibility improvements β€” Step-free access, lifts, and improved platforms at stations across the route

Faster Journey Times

One of the most exciting outcomes of the upgrade will be significantly reduced journey times between Manchester and Leeds. The current journey, which can take over an hour, will be cut to around 40 minutes once the full upgrade is complete. This represents a transformative improvement that will make cross-Pennine commuting more viable and attractive than ever before.

The increased line speed and improved infrastructure will also allow more services per hour, reducing overcrowding and giving passengers greater flexibility in choosing when to travel. The combination of faster trains and more frequent services will fundamentally change the experience of travelling between the North's two largest cities.

Environmental Benefits

Electrification is at the heart of the environmental case for the TRU. Electric trains produce zero direct emissions at the point of use, and as the national electricity grid continues to decarbonise, the environmental benefits will only increase over time. By making rail travel faster and more convenient, the upgrade will also encourage modal shift from road to rail, reducing congestion and air pollution across the region.

The programme also includes sustainable construction practices, with recycled materials used wherever possible and careful management of environmental impacts during the construction phase. Biodiversity enhancements, including new habitats along the railway corridor, are an integral part of the project.

What It Means for You

During the construction phase, there will inevitably be some disruption to services, including weekend closures and altered timetables. TransPennine Express is committed to keeping passengers informed and minimising the impact of engineering works through replacement bus services, alternative routes, and clear advance communication.

We encourage all passengers to check before you travel using the TPExpress app or our travel updates page, especially at weekends and during school holidays when major engineering work is often scheduled. The short-term inconvenience will be more than justified by the long-term benefits of a faster, greener, and more reliable railway.

The TransPennine Route Upgrade is not just about improving a railway line. It is about connecting communities, supporting economic growth, and building a sustainable transport network for the North of England. Together, we are building a railway fit for the future.
